~ AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST ~

I don't remember never being an artist. Even as a child, with my clumsy attempts at drawing, I was driven by that inner "something" that makes us pick up pencil or brush, and put it to paper or canvas.

pinesGrowing up in northern New Mexico, I was inspired by the same skies, mountains, and high deserts that have inspired Santa Fe and Taos artists for years. Later, as I travelled throughout the United States and to other countries as an adult, I experienced every type of environment: from urban to rural settings; from the lush, pastoral valleys of the East, to the rocky seascapes of Big Sur and Carmel, and everything in-between. During these twenty-plus years, I also gained experience in various media and techniques, including the use of oils, acrylics, and chalks. While living in Japan, I added traditional Japanese charcoal painting, learning the rule of "less is more", and experiencing the subtleties of the "simplicity" of Asian art.

Somewhere along this journey, I also discovered who I am as an artist, and how I express that in my work. yucca Webster's defines "Surrealism" as "a modern movement in art and literature, in which an attempt is made to portray or interpret the workings of the unconscious mind, as manifested in dreams; it is characterized by an irrational, noncontextual arrangement of material." This is who I am--who I always was--but didn't know it. "Life is but a Dream", and Surrealism has given me the freedom to paint this Dream.

I have come full circle in both my travels and my art. Returning to New Mexico, I am again surrounded by the surrealistic magic of my childhood; since discovering wax painting nine years ago, the oils, acrylics, chalks, and charcoals gather dust; only the wax helps me capture the magic of this enchanted place.
